FDA Initiates Grace Period for Providing Unique Facility Identifier (UFI) for the 2020 Food Facility Registration Biennial Renewal Season

Dec 3, 2020 | Registration

UPDATE 04/01/2021:
On March 30, 2021, FDA announced that they are further extending the UFI deadline for Food Facilities until December 31, 2022. This is the second extension of this kind in response to industry concerns that food facilities were unable to obtain a UFI in a timely manner. https://www.fda.gov/media/143997/download

Original post 12/03/2020:
FDA recently announced its implementation of a 90-day grace period for food facility registrants who are experiencing a delay in obtaining their DUNS number, which is currently the only accepted means of complying with the new unique facility identifier (UFI) requirement. All registrants are still expected to provide their DUNS number prior to December 31, 2020, however, the Agency has recognized that delays in obtaining a DUNS number have been reported.

To address these concerns, FDA intends to allow registrants experiencing a temporary delay in their DUNS number assignment to submit their registration or renewal with “PENDING” entered in the UFI field of the registration form. This temporary solution will provide the registrant 90 calendar days from the day of submission to update their registration with their DUNS number once it has been assigned.

FDA will be sending out reminders via email to those that have submitted registrations with a pending status. Failure to update the registration within the 90-day grace period will result in the cancellation of the facility registration.
