FDAImports.com was proud to recently be part of the first annual China International Nutrition and Health Summit, held in Beijing in early November. Partner Rick Quinn and Associate Attorney Ge Song attended, and Mr. Quinn spoke to an interested audience about the complexities of bringing dietary supplements to the United States market.

Mr. Quinn’s presentation provided an introduction to the agencies involved in regulating dietary supplements in the U.S. market and how they define “dietary supplement,” as well as giving an insightful overview into the basic requirements for and process of importing. He closed with a discussion of the Food Safety Modernization Act, which expands the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration and allows for further enforcement authority.

China’s dietary supplement industry is growing quickly, and the Chinese government is responding by changing its practices to make things easier for industry members. Zhang Jinjing of the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) commented that the process will change from its current standard – premarket approvals for dietary supplement products – to a new method involving registration and recording. This approach mirror’s FDA’s current method for tracking dietary supplement manufacturers, and this lowered bar could mean an increase in Chinese-manufactured dietary supplements for the U.S. market.

As more and more companies enter the dietary supplement and nutrition industries, it is likely they will encounter difficulties with the complex regulations and overseeing agencies involved in bringing products to the U.S. market. FDAImports.com routinely works with clients of all sizes to determine risks, ensure compliance, and expedite shipments – contact us today to learn more about what we can do for your company.
